 History

The Language Laboratory at Holy Cross College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli, was inaugurated on 25 July 2001 by Dr. Noel Irudhayaraj, Head of the Department of English, Bharathidasan University. The Laboratory was initiated under the visionary leadership of Rev. Sr. Dr. Rosy, the then Principal and Head of the Department of English. Equipped with fifteen language learning systems, the Laboratory commenced its journey with the objective of strengthening English language proficiency among students, particularly first-generation learners from rural and semi-urban backgrounds.

From 2001 to 2008, the Laboratory was efficiently coordinated and developed by Dr. Flora Shanti Baliah, ELT expert and former Reader in English. During her tenure, the UGC Major Research Project, “Need-Based Methods and Materials for Imparting Effective Communication Skills in English for Rural and Semi-urban Women Students through a Language Laboratory,” significantly enhanced the Laboratory's outreach and effectiveness. The project enabled the development of innovative learning materials and methodologies, helping students improve their spoken English, reading habits, pronunciation, intonation, and interactive communication skills. It also played a vital role in assisting linguistically disadvantaged learners in overcoming mother tongue interference and developing accurate English articulation.

Until 2016, the Language Laboratory functioned with need-based instructional materials, glottophone consoles, curated workshops, and dedicated human resources, under the able coordination of Rev. Sr. Judy Gomez, Assistant Professor of English. During this period, the Laboratory continued to provide students with meaningful opportunities to strengthen their communicative competence through practical and learner-centred language training.

A major technological transformation took place in 2017 under the principalship of Rev. Sr. Dr. Christina Bridget, when the Laboratory was upgraded with the installation of iTell Language Learning Software, introducing self-paced and technology-enabled learning. This modernization marked a new phase in language education by encouraging independent learning and greater learner engagement.

Since 2021, the Language Laboratory has emerged as a pioneer in Artificial Intelligence (AI)-supported language learning in Tamil Nadu. In the same year, the Laboratory signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Learning Matters, leading to the procurement of five Amazon Echo Dot devices. These AI-enabled tools transformed language learning into a more personalized and interactive experience, allowing students to develop their communication skills through voice-assisted, self-paced learning.

Continuing its commitment to innovation, the Laboratory signed another Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Confidence Education Consultants in July 2025. This collaboration was aimed at strengthening language training initiatives, enhancing communicative competence, and expanding opportunities for skill development through collaborative academic and professional programmes.

In August 2025, under the visionary leadership of Rev. Dr. Sr. Isabella Rajakumari, Director and Principal, the Language Laboratory was upgraded as Sr. Marie Rita International Language Lab. This milestone reflected the institution's commitment to transforming the Laboratory into a centre of excellence for multilingual education, technology-integrated language learning, and global communication. Celebrating its Silver Jubilee in 2026, the Laboratory proudly marks 25 years of excellence in empowering first-generation learners through quality language education.

 Our Journey

Key milestones in the development of the Sr. Marie Rita International Language Lab:

 Multilingual Scope & Coordination

The upgraded Laboratory has evolved beyond English language teaching into a vibrant centre for multilingual education. Along with its successful Certificate Course in French offered in collaboration with the Department of French, the Laboratory now proposes to offer Certificate Courses in foreign languages such as German, Japanese and Korean enabling students across disciplines to acquire global language competencies and improve their international career prospects. These programmes aim to prepare learners for higher education, employment, and cross-cultural communication in an increasingly globalized world.

From 2017 to 2026, the Language Laboratory was coordinated by Dr. M. Mary Jayanthi, Associate Professor of English. During this period, Dr. Merlin Depsy Nithiya N, Assistant Professor of English, served as the Teacher Member of the Laboratory and worked alongside a dedicated team of Language Trainers. Together, they played a significant role in planning and implementing training programmes, developing innovative teaching methodologies, and compiling comprehensive workbooks for basic and intermediate-level language learners.

In 2026, Dr. Merlin Depsy Nithiya N assumed charge as the Coordinator of the Sr. Marie Rita International Language Lab. She is supported by Dr. M. Mary Jayanthi, Associate Professor of English, as the Teacher Member, along with Dr. Desiree Ann, Assistant Professor of English, and two experienced Language Trainers. Together, they continue to strengthen the Laboratory's mission of providing high-quality language education through innovative and learner-centred practices.

Today, the Sr. Marie Rita International Language Lab stands as a dynamic centre for language learning, innovation, and global engagement. Committed to preparing 21st-century digital natives, the Laboratory integrates Artificial Intelligence, technology-enabled learning, multilingual education, and experiential pedagogy to create personalized learning experiences. It remains open to academic collaborations with institutions and organizations in the fields of English Language Teaching, AI-assisted language learning, multilingual education, foreign language training, and communication skills development. With its learner-centric philosophy, commitment to academic excellence, and global outlook, the Laboratory continues to empower students with the linguistic, digital, and intercultural competencies required to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

 Objectives

In accordance with the Vision and Mission of the College, the following are the objectives of the Language Lab:

• To create a non-threatening atmosphere for the learners and promote autonomy in thinking and expression.
• To help students acquire proficiency in LSRW skills.
• To develop confidence to express oneself spontaneously.
• To develop confidence to interact with the teacher and peer.
• To correct grammatical errors incidentally and specifically.
• To help learners speak with accuracy.
• To train in soft skills.
• To introduce students to Certification courses in English (e.g., IELTS).
• To sign MoU with schools and colleges for training students to acquire language proficiency.
• To upgrade the teachers of English in Schools and Colleges with creative teaching methodologies.
• To promote AI-assisted language learning.
