History
The vital figure behind the steady development of the Chemistry Department was the gentle and kind German missionary Fr. Hass S.J. – lovingly referred to as the Godfather of the Chemistry Department. As a Professor of Chemistry, he initiated the Chemistry course and equipped the laboratory in Holy Cross College with meticulous care.
Our Journey
Key milestones in the development of the PG & Research Department of Chemistry:
Established at the Intermediate level under the leadership of Fr. Hass S.J.
Introduced the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry programme.
Started B.Sc. Shift-II in 1993 and elevated to PG Department with M.Sc. Chemistry in 1995.
Offering B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. programmes supported by the DBT-STAR College Scheme with 18 vibrant faculty members.
Infrastructure & Research Excellence
All classrooms are digitalized and fitted with LCD projectors. The department features three large, well-equipped laboratories for regular classes and an exclusive research laboratory. Restructuring of laboratory practices has been implemented with Green Chemistry practicals.
The Department has published more than 300 research papers in National and International journals of repute, specializing in Phytochemistry, Nanochemistry, Green Chemistry, Corrosion, Kinetics, Electrochemistry, and Adsorption studies. Around 20 research scholars are actively pursuing research. Students undergo summer internships at premier institutes including IGCAR (Kalpakkam), IISc (Bangalore), IIT Madras, and IISER Trivandrum.
Being members of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), MHRD, II UG students initiated the project “SWACHATHA URINTRICITY” (converting urine into electricity), which is currently in the patent filing process.

Academic Achievements & Best Practices
The department has achieved 8 Gold Medals and 38 University Ranks across UG and PG programmes. M.Sc. students complete a six-month research project aligned with the UGC-NET curriculum to prepare them for advanced education, industry, and scientific careers.
Under the banner of Lavoisier Chem Association, the department organizes the Chem-Expo exhibition, Chem-Fest competitions, International Scientist meets, and career guidance workshops. Student-led initiatives include the Curie Chemistry Forum, interactive bulletin boards, the annual newsletter Chem.Com, and the student welfare fund Chem Luminescent for financial assistance.
