COMPUTER SCIENCE


History



The Department of Computer Science completed its Silver Jubilee in the year 2021 and progressed towards Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship development across the years.

The Department started in the year 1996, with B.Sc. degree programme in Computer Science with a sanctioned strength of 40; and with an intake of 37 students, 3 Lecturers and 2 Lab Instructors. Her Excellency Justice M. Fathima Beevi, Governor of Tamil Nadu, inaugurated the Computer Science division the Mother Claudine Block on 28th August 1998. Thus 3 floors of a separated wing with 3 Labs, around 200 computer systems with servers and internet facilities the Department functioned in two shifts (Shift I & Shift II) of timing from 8.30 am. to 1.30 pm. and 1.45 pm to 6.15 pm.

The encouraging development and the growth of the U.G. Degree courses have resulted in the M.Sc. Degree course in Computer Science in the year 1999. Thus the Department provides both U.G. Programme (B.Sc. Computer Science) and P.G. Programme (M.Sc. Computer Science) and have become a full-fledged department.

Earlier before the Department, Since 1988, the College Computer Training Centre initiated training programmes in various Computer Languages, Packages, Utilities, Graphical interface applications and Web based technologies, which provides quick, simple and specific job opportunities for the young women generation. The centre offers various certificate and Diploma courses and short term courses for the students studying other major degrees too. This provides a parallel opportunity for gaining knowledge in Computer Technology.

As a Research Initiative, the department applied with the proposal for the Grant of Research Department, inspection was conducted in the Department on 8th December 2022 and the approval for the Recognition of Research Centre was granted on 4th February 2023. Three Faculty members registered for Ph.D, and 3 staff were cleared the Eligibility test for Ph.D. Registration.
