ZOOLOGY


History



The emerging versatile School of life sciences came into existence since June, 2020. TheDepartment of Zoology happens to hold major part of it. While going through the heritage structure of Zoology Department, it seems amazing, as its parent Department of Biology had its origin in 1935 and later during 1960, the Department of Zoology was segregated from its parent Department and stemmed to function with B.Sc. Degree course under Madras University. Perhaps in the year 1973, the Post Graduate in Zoology was started leading to the fabulous results with Firstclasses, there by many bright university rank holders and merit scholarship seekers were produced. In 1982, the Department haselevated to research Department with affiliation granted for M.Philand Ph.D. programs. Meanwhile the Department has undertaken many research activities under UGC, DST-FIST and DBT Star College Scheme and also funded by DST-FIST. The prime focus of the department is mainly to empower students hailing from rural backdrop through education, research,skilland personality development. The exclusive salient credentials of the Department comprises of the following;


- Since 2008 and 2010 the Zoology Department came under the preview of DBT-FIST funded category and DBT-STAR college scheme respectively.

- During 2014, two UGC sponsored Major Projects and Minor Projects and one DST-SERB sponsored NPDF were completed.

- From 2020, Zoology Department began to nestle within the School of Life Sciences.

- Since 2006, twenty Doctorates were produced.

- The faculties had contributed to the tune of 160 Research Publications in renowned National and International Journals and their cumulative Citation-Index has crossed 800.

- Under Graduates and Post Graduates regularly present papers in conferences / seminars / symposium and publish research articles in well recognized and peer reviewed National as well as International Journals habitually.

- Syllabus revision to meet the current advancements and to be in live wire with NET / SET Syllabi and other Universities happens to be culture of theDepartment.

 - Since 2012 onwards, twelve Under Graduate and Post Graduatestudents secured Universityranks representing First and Secondpositions.

- ICT mode of teaching, e- lessons and Webinar lectures, National Conferences, Workshops and International Conferences are the regular activities according to the order of the day.

- Studentssystematically participatein the State and National level intercollegiate competitions and has brought laurels in the form of winning streak through drawing overall trophies.

- Individual and group projects for Under Graduate final year students, exclusive individual projects for Post Graduate final year students, presenting their research work through power points and publishing in reputed journals, compulsory internship and industrial visit for both UG and PG Students were main highlights of our academic progress.

- Similarly, hands on training to enrich practical skills, familiarity with virtual lab and advanced laboratory equipments through techniques became the technical phase of the Department.

- Well recognised alumni of the Department were identified at high positions in India and other countriessuch as USA, Taiwan, Singapore, Finland, Switzerland, Malaysia and Australia.

- TheDepartment nurtures well-equipped Animal Cell Culture facility and Animal House to undergo research in the area of cell culture and animal studies.

- Appreciable number of Post Graduate students have cleared NET, SLET and other competitive examinations to shape their future.


Uniqueness



National Wild Life Week is held from October 2 to October 8 every year to spread the message of protecting and preserving India’s flora and fauna in the country. In tune with the National Wild Life Week celebration of the Country, the PG and Research Department of Zoology celebrates an intercollegiate competition “Festotle” on the Conservation and Preservation of Wild Life in its natural habitat. In addition to creating awareness among school students of adopted villages regarding the conservation and preservation of wildlife, several competitions are held for school students of 6th to 10th standard. Every year this competition is held among college and school students to protect and preserve India’s fauna for the future generations to come.

To build a strong foundation for the holistic development of students and to create an enhanced learning environment to develop young professionals and entrepreneurs in Zoology with a profound knowledge and skill in all aspects of Life Sciences for the benefit of humanity.
