OBJECTIVE
To educate the students the importance of Social work, and the role of a social worker in the various settings of importance to the society.
To make the students inculcate a strong interest in serving the needy population on completion of training.
To provide knowledge of the causes of psychiatric problems methods and Intervention, Treatment and Rehabilitation.
To bring about the an understanding of welfare of the family, women, children, youth, aged and the disabled.
To equip students with appropriate skills to become Medical social workers, Psychiatric social workers, counsellors, Human resource managers and social welfare administrators & community organizers.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES – COMPLETED (2013-2014)

SWAN, Social Work Association inaugurated was organized on 17th July 2015. Dr.Mrs.G. Kanaga, assistant professor and head department of social work, Cauvery College for women was the special invitees of the event. She addressed the students on the topic “Social Work education and practice in today’s scenario”. She motivated the budding social worker to strong in skills like, communication, report writing, analyzing ect

Rural camp, Imayam 2013  was organized for the first year MSW students from 25th Aug. 2013 to 31st Aug.2013 in SolangaNallur. Fr.Arul Doss , Director , SHEPHERD programme , St.Joseph’s college was the chief guest of the camp. The students conducted programme on Importance of Education, Women Empowerment and Health and Sanitation programme
A Resource talk on Corporate Social Responsibility was held on 26th  July 2013. Mr. Charles Alwin , Senior Manager – CSR , Dalmia Cements was the resource person. He was sharing the New company act and need to spend 2% of the profit for community Development Activities.
One day workshop on Legal Education for Social workers was organized  for the social work students on 2nd Aug. 2013 in association with District Legal Service Authority (DLSA). Ms.Farsana  Begam, Mr.Manoharan,Ms.Sudha and Mr.Balasubramania , Advocates form Trichy court. And Mr.Parthasarathy, Sub-Judge ,DLSA, Trichy was the special invitee of the day.
The Department of Social Work organized one day workshop on Art of Networking  on 27th Nov. 2013 for the students of Social work. Mr.Karthikeyan, National Project Officer, ILO , New Delhi was the facilitator of the workshop. He motivated the students to understand the need and scope of Networking and the importance of improving  the Networking skills in their personal and professional life.
Department of Social Work in collaboration with Department of Rehabilitation Science and Joseph Eye Hospital organized one day Seminar on Professional Skills in Youth on 29th Nov. 2013 for the students.   Mr.B.Tiburtius, Chair Person, Manitham Trust and Dr.Balasubramanian, Medical Supredentent, were the resource persons of the seminar.  Mr.B.Tiburtius spoke about the topic on “Superior Motivation through Super Cooperation” and encouraged the students to develop high motivation in order to arrive at Win-Win Solution. Dr.Balasubramanian, Dean,SRM Hospital  spoke about the recent developments in HIV/AIDS .
Department of Social work in collaboration with Department of History observed World Human Rights Day with the theme “Human Rights Challenges in the Contemporary Society “ on 9th Dec.2013. Mr.Martin and Ms.Jeyanthi Rani , Advocates from Trichy and Mr.Ramajeyam , Asst. Professor from Center for study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Bharathidasan university was the special invitee of the programme.
Resource talk on Dashing of English communication Barriers was organized on 13th Dec. 2013. Dr.S.Veeramani, Assistant Professor , Department o English , St.Joseph’s College was the resource person of the talk.
The department of Social Work, Holy Cross College (Autonomous) organized two days National Conference on Psychological and Social Development of Adolescent and their impact on the Society on 6th and 7th Feb. 2014. The objective of the conference is to discuss the issues and Challenges of Adolescents including third Gender and explore the role of academic institutions, media personal, doctors, Social Workers and Parents in addressing the issues with the active participation of the adolescents.
Ms.Oivya , Feminist from Chennai inaugurated  the conference and appreciated the department to take up a need based discussion.  She expressed her apprehension that parents now a days  have found it difficult to guide the children and they also need orientation and guidance. Dr.Sultana, Reader, School of Social Sciences, Pondicherry university delivered Key note address. And requested the department to create a platform for the students to address their issues with the guidance of the counselor.
A panel discussion with the school children from 5 city based schools was also the part      of the conference. Dr.Niranjana Devi, Psychiatric  Doctor from Govt. Medical college, Fr.Isac, principal, Anugraha College and Dr.Jerida, Associate Professor, Department of Social Work, Bharathidasan university were the panel members and discussed the issues of Adolescents boys and girls and provided expert advise.
In the second  day, Dr.Ramakrishanan, from Athma Hospital,P.Rajan, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu Voluntary health Association ( TNVHA), Ms.Salai Selvam , Ms.Olga were the panel speakers and discussed the issues adolescents. Around 35 research papers were presented during the conference. The Valedictory foundation was facilitated by Dr.Sr.Maria Kamala, Director, Socsead and Mr.Randeep kumar, Clinical Psychologist gave key note address.

Rural Camp, “Matrangal” 2014 was organized for the first year MSW students from 30th July 2014 to 5th Aug.2014 in Kuruvampatti. The students conducted awareness programme on women welfare, Status of society, Social change, Sanitation. And input sections on Self-discovering, Social analysis, Leadership and Team building, Eye camp, Yoga, and Social worker attitude.
One day workshop on Social Case Work was held on 23rd of July 2014 in collaboration with Come Alive, Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Sr.Saghayamary, Director, Come Alive was the resource person of the day. During the discussion various social work techniques and difference between case work and counseling were delivered.
One day workshop on Social Group Work was held on 25th of July in collaboration with Come Alive, Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Sr.Saghayamary, Director, Come Alive was the resource person of the day. The discussion on group work process and information related to group work.
Two days workshop on process of counselling for Social workers was organized for the social work students was held on 25.08.2014 & 26.08.2014.  The Resource person for the workshop is Rev.Sr. Catherine, Counsellor of Holy Cross College.

One day programme held on 20/8/15, the topic is Community Based Rehabilitation. The chief guest of the programme is Mr. Muralidhar, Add India and Mr. Paundurai from Annai Theresa Trust. They shared their experience in CBR and motivated the students.

Resource talk on “Role of students in Eradicating liquor” held on 21/8/15. The chief guest of the programme is Mr.Y.Arul Doss, coordinator, anti liquor movement, Tamil Nadu-NAPM. He explained the causes and ill effect of alcoholism to the students.
Resource talk on “Personality Development”held on03/12/14. Mrs. Shiny HRD coordinator, was the chief guest of the programme. The chief guest speaks about Communication Barriers and how to overcome the barriers.
One day International workshop on Social Work Research with special reference to Triangulation (Mixed Methodology) held on 22nd December 2014. keynote address was given by Ms. Annika Karlson, Health Economics, The University of Dalarna, Sweden, she explained about the use of Quantitative Methodology in social science Studies from the global perspectives. P.hd, M.Phil scholars and students from various colleges were participated in the program.  Special invitees are Dr. Fr. V. Joseph Xavier, Director, St. Joseph Institute of Management and Mr. Joseph Sahaya Anand, Associate Professor, Faculty of Manufacturing Engg, Technical University of Malaysia Melaka, Malaysia.
