Holy Cross College (Autonomous) Tiruchirappalli, has been in the forefront of women's education for eight decades and more. It was started for the benefit of the young girls of Tiruchirappalli as early as 1923, when higher education for women was considered almost a transgression against the age old respected customs concerning higher education for girls. The Department started in 1957 with undergraduate course with the growth as Autonomy in 1982, Post graduate course was introduced in 1994. In 2010, the department received financial support through DST. The upgradation of the department as PG and Research status was in 2012. M. Phil regular course was started in 2016. From the academic year 2020-2021 onwards, the department became a part of the school of Mathematical Computation Sciences.
The Department of Mathematics is well recognized for teaching and research. It has 23 energetic and dedicated faculty members, among them 14 have completed Ph.D, 7 with SET. It produces professional mathematicians who will be able to study and solve scientific and technological issues using mathematical methods. It also helps the other major students to face the competitive examinations. It offers an exciting and unique opportunity to Ph.D students for pursuing research in the areas such as Fuzzy Set Theory, Inventory Models, Transportation Problems, Queueing Theory, Fuzzy Cognitive Map, Fixed Point Theorems and Graph Theory. It organizes international conferences linked to the areas of our research. Our Graduates of the Department are distinctively placed in reputed institutions and organizations. It has been the cherished goal of the students, a desire to excel, to demonstrate originality and to develop a sense of responsibility towards the society.
Mathematics is an indispensable tool for much of science and engineering. It provides the basic language for understanding the world and lends precision to scientific thought. In B.Sc. Mathematics, the curriculum focuses on providing a solid base on a diverse range of mathematical subjects such as Calculus, Algebra and Trigonometry, Numerical Analysis, Complex Analysis, Linear Programming, etc., developing technological competency, soft skill and life development. Technological tools like Scilab, Latex and Matlab are introduced at the undergraduate level which are used for data analysis and computation. M.Sc. Mathematics course is an amalgamation of indepth knowledge of Algebra, Analysis, Topology, Measure and Integration, Graph Theory, Operation Research, Stochastic Processing etc. It provides a foundation for pursuing research in Mathematics as well as to provide essential quantitative skills, strong analytical skills and broadbased background in the mathematical sciences. Regular feedback from students, Alumni, Industry and Academic Experts enhances the quality of an up-to-date syllabus and helps in initiating changes as and when required.
Department of Mathematics strives to be internationally recognized for academic excellence through the depth of its teaching and research, and to be locally relevant through its role in the development of the community it serves.
The mission of the Mathematics department is to provide an environment where students can learn and become competent users of mathematics and mathematical application. Moreover, the department will contribute to the development of students as mathematical thinkers, enabling them to become life long learners, to continue to grow in their chosen professions, and to function as productive citizens.
